Markus Unternährer is a post-doc researcher in sociology at the university of Lucerne. Currently, he is looking into the rise of fintechs in Switzerland, the history of payment systems and the social processes undergirding their development and maintenance (see his subproject here).
Markus received his doctorate from University of Lucerne in 2022. In his ethnographic field research he looked at the economic lifecycle of personal data: He showed how data becomes a valuable resource for companies because it helps attaching customers to products and companies. His book «Momente der Datafizierung — Zur Produktionsweise von Personendaten in der Datenökonomie» will be published in 2023. His research interests lie at the intersection of markets, categorization, quantification, and valuation.
